In a post on his Truth Social account, Trump said he was “shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear” while President Joe Biden said “everybody must condemn” political violence.
Law enforcement officials have confirmed that a shooting involving former US President Donald Trump is being investigated as an attempted assassination.
Trump was speaking on stage at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania when gunshots rang through the crowd.
Trump reached with his right hand toward his neck before ducking behind the podium.
Agents from his protective detail rushed the stage and screams could be heard from the crowd. Trump was later seen with blood on the side of his face before being bundled away.
In a post on his Truth Social account, Trump said he was “shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear”.
“I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin.”
The local district attorney Richard Goldinger told local media that the unnamed suspect and a member of the audience are dead.
“President Trump thanks law enforcement and first responders for their quick action during this heinous act,” Trump campaign spokesperson Steve Cheung said.
Two sources told CBS that Trump had now left hospital but it is unknown where is heading.
In a speech, President Joe Biden said “everybody must condemn” political violence.
“There’s no place in America for this kind of violence. It’s sick,” he said.
Biden was scheduled to stay in Delaware this weekend but instead will return to the White House.
