There’s little to nothing more controversial in generative AI than detection. Some defend it deeply, saying that it’s the last resort against dishonesty by way of ChatGPT and other AI models. Others, even OpenAI themselves, disapprove of this technology. After all, it’s been the source of many false positive cases over the last year.
For some people, paraphrasing tools have been a godsend in fighting against false accusations of using AI. However, since it’s an emerging segment, one too many have popped up in this space, and there’s no guarantee that you’re picking the right one unless you give them a try.
If you don’t have the time nor patience for trial and error, don’t worry! In this article, I’ll be going through two of the most popular paraphrasers in the market today: Undetectable AI and Paraphraser.io. Let’s see which one lives up to their namesake, shall we?
What are Undetectable AI and Paraphraser.IO?
At their cores, Undetectable AI and Paraphraser.IO are, as the latter’s name suggests, tools made to paraphrase text. However, their biggest difference is their use case.
Undetectable AI is an AI bypass paraphraser that turns machine-generated text into something that resembles human writing. This is possible through rewriting the content and removing certain AI markers that detectors often flag, like repetition, common AI words and sentence structure, and watermarks.
Paraphraser.IO is a much more straightforward tool. Instead of purposefully avoiding AI markers, it focuses on creating a more structurally sound paraphrased version of the original text than Undetectable AI. This, unfortunately, means it’s more likely to be classified as AI by detectors, but we’ll get to that in a minute.
Undetectable AI vs. Paraphraser.IO: Features
Undetectable AI’s biggest feature, besides AI bypassing, is its output customizability. You won’t have to retrofit their output based on your use case; they’ll do it for you. You can pick your preferred readability level (ranges from high school to doctorate and includes marketing or journalism) and its use case (general writing, essay, story, marketing copy, and more).
For $5 monthly, you can also purchase their human typing extension, which lets you simulate human typing behavior on Google Docs.
Moving on to Paraphraser.io, you won’t get many features in this app. What you do get is access to 22 different languages, something that Undetectable AI is yet to offer. You can also switch between three different modes (fluency, standard, and word changer) for free, but you can unlock three more with the paid version (creative, smarter, and shorter).

Let’s start with something simple: grammar issues. What you’ll notice when reading about Undetectable AI’s output is its punctuation and grammar mistakes. No, this wasn’t an error on my part — instead, Undetectable AI purposefully hides AI text behind these mistakes. It does mask AI writing, but it also messes up the fluency of the original text.
On the other hand, Paraphraser did not have any grammar or punctuation errors at all. However, it does lack an understanding of the source material. For example, the original text uses “conductor’s baton” as a simile for the meticulousness of artists. By losing the word “conductor” and without any reference to music, the simile loses all its meaning and the phrase “like a baton” just stands out like a sore thumb.

And one more thing, although this is admittedly a personal pet peeve. I haven’t messed around the formatting of these, so what you see above is how each tool outputs their texts. I’m not a big fan of Paraphraser.io messing around with the structure of the paragraph by dividing it by sentence. But as I said, it’s a personal preference.

Paraphraser.io already has a robust free version. However, if you want to get the additional paraphrasing modes, you have to purchase their premium plan for $7 per week, $20 per month, or $12.5 per month ($150 for the whole year) if you want to pay annually.
The Bottom Line
This is one of the easiest comparison articles I’ve had to make because there is a clear answer. So, here it is:
Do I recommend giving Paraphraser.io a shot? Since it’s mostly free, absolutely. But do I recommend using Paraphraser.io as a daily driver? Not at all.
The bottom line is that Undetectable AI has an excuse for having subpar grammar accuracy and creativity. After all, it’s an AI bypass tool first and a paraphraser second. Paraphraser.io isn’t. The fact that it can’t avoid AI detection while having creativity and fluency issues does not make it worthy of its name.
If there’s one edge that Paraphraser.io has over Undetectable AI, it’s the price. However, if you want something that won’t break the bank, it’s better to just use QuillBot’s free paraphrasing tool by breaking down your text into smaller parts and stitching them back together like a jigsaw puzzle.
